Which heat pump fits a Los Angeles home
The right heat pump depends on whether the house already has ducts. Many Los Angeles homes built before central air do not, and that is where a ductless system fits.
| Type | How it delivers air | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|
| Single-zone ductless mini split | One indoor unit, one outdoor unit | A bedroom, garage, ADU, addition or home office |
| Multi-zone ductless mini split | Several indoor units on one outdoor unit, each with its own temperature setting | Homes with no ducts, such as bungalows with wall or floor furnaces |
| Ducted heat pump with an air handler | Through existing ducts | Homes replacing a furnace and central air conditioner |
| Short-run ducted mini split | A hidden unit serving two or three rooms | Rooms where you do not want equipment on the wall |
Mitsubishi Electric is our main line. See Mitsubishi mini splits in Los Angeles, the Mitsubishi SVZ air handler for homes with ducts, and replacing a wall heater with a mini split.
Heat pump installation in Los Angeles
A heat pump installation starts with a free consultation and ends with a tested, permitted system. Sizing is the step that matters most.
- Consultation at your home. We look at the rooms, the existing ducts if there are any, the electrical panel and where the outdoor unit can go.
- Load calculation. ENERGY STAR advises that a contractor verify the size of the system with a Manual J calculation. A system that is too large or too small struggles to keep the home comfortable.
- Written quote. You get a price for the equipment, the electrical work and the installation.
- Permit. In the City of Los Angeles, a mechanical permit is required to install or change a heating or cooling system.
- Installation and testing in both heating and cooling.
Details for ductless systems are on our mini split installation page, with price ranges in the installation cost guide.
Heat pump repair
Book a diagnostic visit when a heat pump stops heating or cooling, ices over, leaks water indoors or shows an error code. The visit is $189, and you get a price for parts and labor before any repair starts.
- Blowing air that is not warm or not cool. Often a refrigerant, sensor or reversing valve fault.
- Ice on the outdoor unit that does not clear. A short defrost cycle in winter is normal. Ice that stays is not.
- Water dripping from an indoor unit. Usually a blocked drain or a dirty coil.
- Blinking lights or a code on the controller. Look it up in our Mitsubishi error code guide.
Our technicians are factory trained on Mitsubishi Electric. For other brands, call with the make and model and the office will confirm before booking. See mini split repair and what repairs cost in Los Angeles.
Heat pump tune-ups and maintenance
A heat pump runs in both summer and winter, so it needs attention more often than equipment used for one season. ENERGY STAR recommends two habits.
- Every month: inspect, clean or change the air filter.
- Every year: have a contractor check the system before the season, cooling in spring and heating in fall.
Call for a free quote on a heat pump tune-up. For ductless systems, a mini split cleaning is $199 for the first indoor unit and $59.99 for each additional one. See our maintenance plans for a yearly visit.
Heat pump replacement
Replace a heat pump when a major part fails on an older system or when repairs keep coming back. One common test, used by This Old House: multiply the repair quote by the age of the system, and if the result is over $5,000 on a system older than 10 years, get a replacement quote.
Replacement quotes are free. Financing is available for new systems.
Rules and rebates in Los Angeles, as of October 2026
No rule requires you to replace working heating or cooling equipment in an existing home. The rules and incentives below affect new construction and the price of a new system.
| Program or rule | Status |
|---|---|
| California 2025 Energy Code | Applies to permit applications filed on or after January 1, 2026. It expands the use of heat pumps in newly constructed residential buildings. |
| Federal energy efficient home improvement credit (25C) | The IRS states the credit is allowed for property placed in service before December 31, 2025. It does not apply to a system installed in 2026. |
| TECH Clean California | Single-family heat pump HVAC incentives are fully reserved and not accepting new reservations, per the program’s notice of November 14, 2025. |
| LADWP and Southern California Edison | Programs and amounts change during the year. Check your utility’s current rebate page, or ask us to check when we quote. |
Which utility serves you matters. Homes in the City of Los Angeles are served by LADWP. Most of the South Bay and many surrounding cities are served by Southern California Edison, and Pasadena, Glendale and Burbank run their own utilities. Rebate programs differ between them.

Frequently asked questions
Is a mini split a heat pump?
Yes. A ductless mini split is a type of heat pump, which means the same system heats in winter and cools in summer.
Do heat pumps work in Los Angeles winters?
Yes. A heat pump moves heat instead of making it, and it can deliver up to three times more heat energy than the electricity it uses, according to ENERGY STAR. Los Angeles winters are mild, which suits heat pumps well.
Do I have to replace my furnace with a heat pump?
No. No rule requires you to replace working equipment in an existing home. California’s 2025 Energy Code expands the use of heat pumps in newly constructed homes.
How much does a heat pump cost in Los Angeles?
It depends on the size of the home, whether it has ducts and the electrical work needed. Dr. Ductless gives a free quote after a consultation at the home.
Are there rebates for heat pumps in Los Angeles right now?
Some programs are closed. The federal 25C tax credit does not apply to systems installed in 2026, and TECH Clean California’s single-family heat pump HVAC incentives are fully reserved. Utility programs from LADWP and Southern California Edison change during the year, so check the current page for your utility.
How much is a heat pump repair visit?
A diagnostic visit is $189. On mini splits, the fee is credited toward the repair you approve.
