Do I need a permit to install a mini split in California?
Yes. Mini split installation is permitted work under the California Building Standards Code, and the permit is issued by the city or county building department for your address — Los Angeles, Torrance, Long Beach, and Pasadena each run their own. A licensed contractor pulls the permit and schedules the inspection as part of the job. Unpermitted HVAC work commonly surfaces later during a home sale or appraisal.
Are mini splits legal in California?
Yes, and California energy policy has been moving toward them. Mini splits are heat pumps, and Title 24 building energy standards along with the state's electrification targets have increasingly favored heat pump equipment over gas-fired heating in new construction and major alterations. Equipment sold in California must meet the applicable federal and state efficiency minimums, which your installer verifies through AHRI-certified ratings.
Why is my electric bill high with a mini split?
Usually because the system is doing work your old equipment never did. A mini split that now heats and cools rooms that previously had no conditioning at all will add load even while being more efficient per unit of output. The other common causes are an oversized system short-cycling, a dirty indoor filter or blower wheel restricting airflow, low refrigerant charge from a line-set leak, or running the system in a fixed high-fan mode instead of letting the inverter compressor modulate.
Are ductless mini splits worth it in Los Angeles?
They make the most sense in the specific conditions Los Angeles has in abundance: houses with no ductwork, rooms added after the original build, ADUs and garage conversions, and homes where one or two rooms are uncomfortable while the rest are fine. How long does a ductless installation take?
A single-zone install is commonly completed in one day. Multi-zone systems take longer because each indoor head needs its own line set routed to the outdoor unit, and electrical work — a dedicated circuit and sometimes a panel evaluation — can add time. The scheduling variable that most often extends a project is the city inspection, not the installation itself.
