METUS Chooses R-32 As Refrigerant For VRF Systems In The United States

Why Professional Ductless AC Installation is Critical for Optimal Performance and Safety

On December 27, 2020, the federal American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act of 2020 was enacted to address hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by providing new authorities to the US EPA in three main areas: to phase down the production and consumption of listed HFCs, manage these HFCs and their substitutes, and facilitate the transition to next-generation technologies through sector-based restrictions.

The resulting transition to low GWP refrigerants impacts all HVAC manufacturers selling within or importing to the United States. Under the AIM rules:
  • The deadline for the manufacture and import of single- phase, <65 KBTU/H, R-410A systems is December 31, 2024, and the deadline for sales and installation of single- phase, <65 KBTU/H, R-410A systems is December 31, 2025.
  • The deadline for the manufacture and import, of three- phase, >65 KBTU/H, R-410A systems is December 31, 2025, and the deadline for sales and installation of three- phase, >65 KBTU/H, R-410A systems is December 31, 2026.

After evaluation, Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US LLC (METUS) and its HVAC supplier, Mitsubishi Electric, have determined that R-32 refrigerant is the most suitable choice for its CITY MULTI® VRF systems. Mitsubishi Electric builds and tests their entire system of components. Utilizing R-32 offers advantages over alternate refrigerants for VRF applications, especially those applications requiring larger volumes of refrigerant due to greater tonnage capacity and extended line lengths characteristic of large commercial equipment. R-32 delivers excellent performance under these conditions and supports an improved market launch timing for our customers.

Building on its current success, Mitsubishi Electric leverages its extensive experience with R-32 products, which have been successfully utilized in countries outside the United States for over ten years. With Mitsubishi Electric’s track record of delivering high reliability products paired with the R-32 refrigerant, METUS anticipates meeting consumer expectations while expediting the product development cycle within the United States.

Mitsubishi Electric three-phase, >65 KBTU/H systems containing R-410A refrigerant will continue to be manufactured and imported until December 31, 2025. Mitsubishi Electric systems utilizing R-32 will begin arriving in the US in late 2025. This progression will enable METUS to maintain stock of both R-410A and R-32 models during the transition period.

It is METUS’ continued commitment to collaborate with its customers through this transition, to keep them apprised of any changes to our transition plan, and to safeguard their investments and the future comfort of their buildings and occupants.
