Mitsubishi Refrigerant Changes | Dr. Ductless Heating & Cooling

Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US LLC (METUS) is actively responding to the environmental mandates set by the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act of 2020, a significant U.S. legislation aimed at reducing the usage of harmful chemicals commonly found in air conditioning systems. This initiative is part of a broader effort to curb environmental impacts and promote sustainability in the HVAC industry.

As part of this shift, METUS is transitioning to a more environmentally friendly refrigerant known as R-32 for their advanced CITY MULTI® systems. R-32 is not only better for our planet due to its lower global warming potential, but it also enhances the efficiency of systems, particularly in larger commercial settings where its impact will be most beneficial.

Here are the key changes and dates you need to be aware of regarding this transition:

  • METUS will phase out the production and importation of smaller, single-phase systems using the older R-410A refrigerant by the end of 2024. Sales and installations of these systems will cease by the end of 2025.
  • The larger, three-phase R-410A systems will continue to be manufactured and available for sale until the end of 2026, ensuring a gradual transition and availability of necessary equipment for larger installations.
  • The new, eco-friendly R-32 systems will arrive in the U.S. in late 2025. During this switch, METUS will ensure both old and new types of systems are available.

This proactive change represents a significant step toward more sustainable and efficient air conditioning solutions. If you have any questions or need further clarification about how these changes might affect you, please don’t hesitate to contact us at Dr. Ductless. We’re here to help ensure that your transition to newer, greener technology is as seamless as possible.
