Why the installer matters with a Mitsubishi mini split
The installer decides how well a mini split performs and how long its warranty runs. Mitsubishi Electric trains its Diamond Contractors directly and extends the factory warranty on systems they install.

Which Mitsubishi indoor unit fits which room
Mitsubishi Electric makes five styles of indoor unit, and one outdoor unit can run a mix of them. The right one depends on the wall space, the ceiling and how visible you want the equipment to be.
| Indoor unit | Where it goes | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|
| Wall-mounted (MSZ) | High on a wall | Most bedrooms, living rooms, offices, garages and ADUs |
| Floor-mounted (MFZ) | Low on a wall, near the floor | Rooms with low or sloped ceilings, and replacing an old wall heater |
| One-way ceiling cassette (MLZ) | Recessed in the ceiling between joists | Rooms where you do not want a unit on the wall |
| Four-way ceiling cassette (SLZ) | Recessed in the ceiling | Larger open rooms |
| Ducted (SEZ, PEAD, SVZ) | Hidden in an attic, closet or soffit | Several rooms from one hidden unit, or replacing a furnace and its air handler |
If you already have ducts in good condition, the Mitsubishi SVZ air handler can use them. If your panel is small, 115-volt mini splits are available for single rooms.
How a Mitsubishi installation works
A single-zone installation follows the same six steps as a whole-house one. The difference is the number of indoor units and the planning for the outdoor unit and line covers.
- Free consultation. We look at the rooms, the electrical panel and where the outdoor unit can go.
- Sizing. Each room is sized by a load calculation, not by square footage alone.
- Placement plan. You approve the indoor unit locations and the route of the line covers before work starts. In a condo this is the drawing your HOA board reviews.
- Permit. In the City of Los Angeles, a mechanical permit is required to install or change a heating or cooling system.
- Installation and testing. Each indoor unit connects to the outdoor unit through a single hole of about 3 inches.
- Warranty registration. The system has to be registered within 90 days of installation for the 12-year warranty to apply.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Mitsubishi Electric Elite Diamond Contractor?
It is the highest level in Mitsubishi Electric’s contractor program. Diamond Contractors are independent companies trained directly by Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US, and the program has three levels: Diamond Contractor, Preferred and Elite.
How long is the warranty on a Mitsubishi mini split?
Mitsubishi Electric covers parts and the compressor for 12 years each when a Diamond Contractor installs the system in a single-family home and it is registered within 90 days of installation.
How much does a Mitsubishi mini split cost installed in Los Angeles?
It depends on the number of rooms, the style of indoor unit and the electrical work. Dr. Ductless gives a free quote after seeing the home, and an online instant quote is available for a quick estimate.
Can one Mitsubishi outdoor unit run several rooms?
Yes. A multi-zone outdoor unit connects to several indoor units, and each room keeps its own temperature setting. The number of indoor units depends on the outdoor unit model and the size of the rooms.
Do I need Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat in Los Angeles?
Usually not. Hyper-Heat models are built to keep heating in freezing weather. Coastal and basin Los Angeles rarely gets that cold, so a standard Mitsubishi heat pump covers winter in most homes here. Ask about it if you live in the foothills or mountains.
Do you repair Mitsubishi systems installed by another company?
Yes. A diagnostic visit is $189, and the fee is credited toward the repair you approve.

How Do Ductless Systems Work?
Both ductless and central units work much the same way, sucking the warmth in the air, removing the moisture, then dumping the heat and moisture outside the house. But ductless units blow cool air directly into the room or area they cool, while central AC systems channel cool air into a network of ducts that spread it throughout the entire home, or several rooms.
Ductless air conditioning systems do exactly as their name suggests: they cool indoor spaces without the need of any piping or ducts. They don’t need ducts because they cool only one room, unlike the central units which can cool an entire home.
Ductless AC units contain three major components:
Single-Zone And Multi-Zone Ductless
Choose between a single-zone and a multi-zone Mitsubishi system based on how many rooms you want to heat and cool.
They control temperatures in a single room or area of your home by linking a single indoor unit to one outdoor unit.
Suitable if you wish to control the temperatures of several rooms or spaces. They connect a single outdoor unit to several indoor units. See Your Equipment Price
